Wayne County judge outlines court outreach, juror process to Gibraltar council

Judge Kathleen McCarthy of the Wayne County Circuit Court briefed the Gibraltar City Council on the court’s community outreach and the importance of jury service. "We utilize about 220,000 jurors a year," McCarthy said, urging residents summoned for jury duty to call the number on their summons to reschedule if needed.
McCarthy described the court’s structure, noting divisions for civil (cases over $25,000), criminal (felonies bound over from district courts), family (divorce, child support, custody) and juvenile matters. She said Wayne County has about 60 judges and handles roughly 56,000 cases annually across divisions.
The judge highlighted free or low-cost legal assistance available to county residents, including Detroit Legal Services Clinic, Lakeshore Legal Aid and the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, and encouraged use of Michigan’s online legal-help tools for people representing themselves. "You can go online and look up your area that you're trying to adjudicate," she said, describing the pro se guidance available.
The council thanked McCarthy for the presentation. No action was required or taken; the item was presented as community outreach and information-sharing.
