Steve Grice, a mall merchant at 48 Batavia City Centre, asked the City Council on May 11 for a meeting with council members and other mall merchants to discuss rising user fees, saying the user fee for Dan’s Tire and Auto “has doubled in the last few years” and that some tenants have continued to receive fee breaks after properties changed hands. Grice requested the meeting to review fee practices and impacts on tenants.
City Manager Mrs. Tabelski replied that Dan’s had previously received a fee break and is now paying the full value, and said she did not believe other tenants currently receive similar breaks aside from JCPenney under a settlement agreement. Public Works staffer Tom Phelps told the council that prior merchant meetings were poorly attended. Council President Jankowski suggested scheduling a meeting with mall merchants to discuss the concerns but indicated it is not typically handled by the full council.
The council did not take formal action at the meeting; staff indicated the Department of Public Works would normally convene merchant discussions and a specific meeting will be scheduled for follow-up.
