The Banning Unified School District Board of Trustees provisionally appointed Sharon Liz (Liz) Brewster to the vacant Trustee Area 2 seat following a public interview and a board nomination and vote on June 10, 2026. The board then administered the oath of office and welcomed Brewster to the dais.
Brewster, who introduced herself during the interview as a classified-union president with 11 years as a paraeducator and leadership experience representing classified staff, told the board she would bring a staff-centered perspective and a focus on student success. "I bring a unique perspective that is often under represented on a school board," Brewster said, adding that she has lived in Banning for six years and seeks to serve the district "centered around students' success." The board opened the interview process in public, calling four applicants in order of application receipt. Candidates answered the same set of governance-focused questions about priorities, balancing advocacy for individuals with district-wide needs, and handling confidential information. Adriana Hubert described 13 years as a Riverside County social worker and advocacy experience with IEPs; Vicky Sellers noted her three decades of classified service and current role as an elected city clerk; Alfredo Anel (who said he goes by Alfred) described being a parent of two district students and wanting to help the district continue its progress.
After the interviews, Trustee Nollis moved to nominate Liz Brewster for the provisional appointment; the nomination was seconded and the clerk recorded the result as "Motion passes 40." Brewster then took the oath of office administered at the podium and joined the board in its new, appointed position.
Earlier in the meeting, Clerk Troutman reported a reportable action from closed session: the board approved the expulsion of a middle-school student (case 2025-26-26). The clerk read the closed-session action to the public at the meeting's resumption at 6:53 p.m.
The board thanked all applicants for their willingness to serve and noted the provisional appointment will remain subject to the November 2026 election process for Trustee Area 2.
