Task force sets May 2027 target for Climate Smart Communities recertification; staff to circulate expiring points

Members of the North Tonawanda Climate Smart Task Force discussed planning for Climate Smart Communities (CSC) recertification at their Feb. 11 meeting and identified a target submission date of May 2027.
Erin Hanaburgh, representing the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, said she will circulate a review of expiring CSC points and focused priorities for 2026 by email. The task force discussed which recent or planned activities could earn recertification credit; members highlighted outputs from the city’s Climate Resiliency Plan as potential sources of points, including work that may qualify under credit PE9.
The group did not take a firm recertification vote at this meeting but set follow-up actions to document expiring points and prioritize near-term work that could support the May 2027 submission. Josh Randall, of Cornell Cooperative Extension, noted his recurring energy workshops — with a next workshop scheduled in May — could support an education-and-engagement action the task force is developing.
