The Lewisville Town Council voted on June 11 to ask the state of North Carolina to provide funding to cover federal shortfalls in SNAP and Medicaid benefits.
Council Member Nuome presented Resolution 2026-023, which cites an asserted 748 Lewisville and nearby residents receiving SNAP and approximately 1,500 receiving Medicaid. The resolution asks the state to fill gaps created by recent federal changes and directed the town clerk to forward the resolution to local state legislators, including Representative Jeff Zinger and Senator Dana Jones, and to all members of the North Carolina General Assembly and the North Carolina League of Municipalities.
During debate, one council member cautioned that SNAP and Medicaid are federal and county-administered programs and questioned whether a municipal body should intervene; other council members emphasized the human impacts and argued the town should advocate for constituents who could lose benefits. Supporters said the resolution is a request for the state to step in where federal rules create local gaps.
The council approved the resolution by a recorded voice vote reported as 5–2. Town staff will forward the resolution to the named legislators and the state municipal league as directed.
