Simsbury gives go‑ahead to pursue Eversource grant to install EV chargers at town facilities

The Simsbury Board of Selectmen gave town staff the go‑ahead June 8 to pursue an Eversource grant to install electric vehicle chargers at town facilities, after a discussion about charger types, locations and financial return.
Town Engineer and Public Works Director Tom Roy told the board the grant would fund $20,000 per location for two chargers and described siting options at Town Hall and the Library’s upper and lower parking areas. Roy said the town currently has no public EV chargers and that the town would be able to collect revenue from charging stations.
Selectman Kevin Beal urged caution about charger model selection and placement, and Deputy First Selectman Steve Antonio questioned the investment return and whether there is sufficient demand. Library representative Ms. Miceli said she preferred not to install chargers in the library’s upper lot because of site constraints; Roy noted that avoiding that location would reduce the total number of chargers to four. After discussion, five selectmen directed Mr. Roy to move forward with the project; one member remained unconvinced that immediate installation is warranted.
The board did not adopt a formal ordinance or authorize procurement at this meeting; staff were asked to proceed with the grant process and return with installation plans, cost estimates and recommended charger models for further review.
