Committee confirms interim student-services appointment, introduces new high-school principal and recognizes volunteers and unified sports

The Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee used its June 10 meeting to introduce incoming high-school principal Shawn McNiff, approve an interim director of student services and recognize several volunteers and staff for service to students.
Superintendent Powers introduced Shawn McNiff, who is scheduled to begin full time July 1 after serving as a middle-school principal in Spencer-East Brookfield and earlier roles in New Bedford. "I've had some great opportunities to be in district at the school, meet students, families, staff," McNiff told the committee, and said he looks forward to getting to know the community.
The superintendent also said Miss Christa Sylvane, a current special-education administrator, agreed to serve as interim director of student services after a recent resignation. The committee moved to appoint (the motion as read into the record used the name "Chris Elaine"). The record shows the committee advanced the appointment by a motion from Miss Ky Lento, seconded by Miss King; the committee discussed whether the interim role will be externally posted next year and agreed to revisit the position in late winter or spring.
During the meeting the committee publicly recognized Michelle Senna for sustained advocacy for the district music program and presented her with a certificate. The committee also recognized Claire Brennan, the district nurse leader, for her work organizing a blood drive and for the annual health report, and welcomed unified sports coaches Laura Prevalar and Miss Boscher and athletes who qualified for state competition. Coach Laura Prevalar noted several athletes placed highly at the state meet and said the program hopes to host a basketball jamboree and set up a summer Special Olympics-supported program.
Chair and members offered appreciation for Assistant Superintendent Barry's four years of service as she prepares to depart; Barry thanked the district for the support of health and mental-health initiatives.
The committee said the interim student-services appointment will be formalized and the appointee will introduce herself at the July meeting; administration will post or revisit the permanent position next school year.
