Chief of Police James Eyes told the commission the department needs the changes in place quickly because a physical-agility test for police applicants is scheduled for July 11, creating a tight timetable to complete local approvals.
The change affects the ordinance language governing the merit commission and related hiring procedures. Commissioners said multiple attorneys reviewed the revisions and that in-person discussion allowed opposing points to be aired and resolved. The mayor, commissioners said, asked staff and counsel to work together to finalize the language.
Commissioners discussed logistics for the council review: they noted a council meeting on June 15 and a later meeting on July 6 and considered whether the council might suspend rules to complete both readings at one meeting. The chief said he would post the revised ordinance at the police department after council review.
A separate administrative motion to approve payment claims (including attorney services and commissioner per-diems) was also presented during the meeting.
