Commission advances oral-histories project, walking-tour planning and training schedule

The Unionville Historic District and Properties Commission handled routine business after closing the public hearing on June 11.

Members approved the May 7 meeting minutes with a small textual correction and one abstention recorded because a member had been absent. Commissioners circulated a list of prospective interviewees for the commission's oral-histories program; the list includes volunteers who agreed to conduct interviews and named interview subjects (Hal and Linda were clarified during the meeting). Members asked staff to scan and distribute the list electronically for follow-up.

Commissioners reviewed a property-recruitment list originally compiled in 2018 and discussed outreach for walking tours. They noted potential overlap with ongoing Unionville redevelopment walking tours and discussed timing so the commission’s tour would not conflict with other events. The commission also expects upcoming applications including a church sign and a museum sign and discussed scheduling those items for August or September review.

A commissioner proposed sharing a training video produced by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the Connecticut Preservation Trust with commissioners for home viewing; the commission agreed to a dedicated discussion session in September (and possibly October) to field questions and review Farmington’s guidelines for construction and alterations.

The meeting closed after routine personal remarks and a motion to adjourn.
