"The Purple Heart, we've never had one," staff said during the presentation, noting the city does not currently have a Purple Heart memorial and that the previously installed Gold Star plaque had been salvaged and is in the parks office. Commissioners expressed support for locating the memorials on the Common, noted the design sensitivity because the Common lies partially within a burial-ground area, and discussed practical matters such as lighting, fencing, and whether to provide parking or seating that would benefit visiting families.
Rob (parks staff) told the commission there is not yet funding allocated for construction; veteran services would be the likely lead on fundraising or securing donations. The commission approved the concept and directed staff to proceed with necessary historic-preservation and accessibility reviews and to return with more detailed designs and funding plans.
