Commission forwards trails map to council; plans kiosks, interpretive material for three parks

Parks staff presented a new trails map intended to clarify current and proposed trail corridors and support grant applications for trail construction and improvements. The presenter told commissioners the map will help secure funding for future trails and that, once adopted, the city will purchase kiosks and produce larger interpretive maps for main parks.

The presenter said the adopted map would be installed in kiosks at Autocaster Park, River Park and Blue Heron Park and that staff intend to develop an interpretive, interactive map for the city GIS system. Staff also said they had received suggestions from the Phoenix Wetlands Group to add interpretive points near riparian features and cold‑water streams; the presenter said the wetlands group’s recommendations were generally good but that some trail alignments were modified to reduce perpendicular trail connections for safety.

Commissioners complimented the map’s clarity, suggested clearer color contrasts between existing and proposed trails, and asked staff about kiosk sizes and maintenance plans. Staff said kiosks will be steel‑plated with maps sized approximately 24 by 36 and that maintenance and future grant programs are expected to support upkeep. The commission moved and voted to forward the map to city council for adoption by resolution; the motion passed on roll call.
