School board approves $1.33 million turf conversion at Robertson High in 3–2 vote

The Las Vegas City Public Schools Board on Tuesday approved a $1,334,260.91 contract with Lone Mountain Contracting to convert Robertson High School’s Cardinal Stadium from natural grass to a synthetic-turf system, passing the measure 3–2.
Superintendent Ms. Sandoval recommended the contract, saying the project includes a shock pad, a drainage liner, Predator-brand synthetic turf with a 10-year warranty, and that Lone Mountain will provide a turf groomer and turf sweeper at no charge. The contract total was stated during the recommendation as $1,334,260.91.
Board member Dennis Romero opposed the measure, saying the board had not seen engineering reports or soil compaction results and that the area historically has poor soils. “I can’t vote in the affirmative,” Romero said, noting the district is spending taxpayer money and requesting additional engineering verification before proceeding.
Ms. Sandoval invited Lone Mountain representatives to respond. Will, a Lone Mountain project representative, said the standard installation includes a 4-inch aggregate base course and 2 inches of crushed fines, meeting industry practice, and that contractors verify base compaction to about 95 percent before turf installation. He said contractors and the district will perform multiple checks and that the company can warrant the base it installs.
Contractors also described the drainage plan: perforated drain pipes, drainage liners, trench backfill with crushed rock, and laser leveling to ensure a one-percent slope so water flows properly. They said field layouts and panel placement drawings, including dimensions and markings conforming to NFHS and IAAF standards, will be provided as part of the submittal package after approval.
After discussion and a roll-call vote, Dennis Romero and Mrs. Elaine Martinez Gonzalez voted no; the other board members voted yes, and the motion passed 3–2. According to the board’s comments, Lone Mountain will provide progress updates and submittals to the school district during construction.
The board’s next steps are to accept contractor submittals and schedule pre-construction verifications; multiple board members requested that the district receive engineering or compaction reports and field layout plans before or during installation.
