Planning board backs local designation of Red Bank properties on state and national registers

The Red Bank Planning Board on June 10 recommended that the mayor and council consider ordinance 26-17, which would add a local designation for properties already listed on state and national historic registers to provide an extra layer of local review and protection.
A representative of the Historic Preservation Commission explained the proposal aligns with the borough’s 2023 master plan and stressed that local designation would help prevent inappropriate exterior alterations or demolition of landmark properties. The representative read a list of properties that would be included, among them the Bassy Theater (formerly the Carlton), the T. Thomas Fortune House, the Red Bank Passenger Station and Middle Red Bank Middle School.
Board members moved and seconded a recommendation to the mayor and council. The motion carried; one member (Frederick Stone) recorded an abstention in the transcript. The board instructed staff to include the recommendation and the board’s comments in the letter to the governing body.
