After Measure A fails, Soledad council adopts interim funding to buy time for budget decisions

The Soledad City Council on June 10 adopted Resolution 6369, authorizing interim funding that continues city operations at FY 25/26 adjusted budget levels from July 1 through Aug. 31 while staff prepares the full FY 26/27 budget.
City Manager Megan told the council the interim approach is necessary after Measure A — a parcel tax proposal to fund fire and emergency medical services that failed in the June 2 election — did not pass. Megan said staff must identify and implement service reductions to produce a balanced budget if additional revenue is not secured.
Council members discussed timing and strategy for another ballot measure. Council Member Caldera asked whether the measure could be placed on the November ballot; staff replied it is legally possible but that more time would be prudent to analyze why the measure failed and to develop revised outreach and policy approaches. Mayor Velasquez and others urged public budget workshops and community engagement before any new proposal is considered.
The resolution passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition. Staff plans to return to the council in August (likely the second meeting) with draft reduction recommendations and community engagement plans.
