State allocates $5 million for harbor-town ferry plan; Hertford told it may not be ready by August

Interim Manager Janice McKenzie Cole told the council that the legislature has appropriated a $5 million grant to establish and operate a water-transportation system to increase tourism among five harbor towns: Elizabeth City, Hertford, Edenton, Plymouth and Columbia. Coordinators said they want to start as soon as August 2022; Cole told council only Elizabeth City and Edenton would be ready by that timetable and that Hertford will be delayed unless staff accelerates preparations.
Cole said Hertford must ensure it is not left out of the project and should take steps to coordinate with the other towns and project organizers. The council did not take a formal vote or commit funding at the meeting; the discussion was an informational update.
