LaPorte County sheriff reports uptick in incidents, notes personnel change and 2027 budget preparations

The LaPorte County Sheriff told the Sheriff's Merit Board on June 10 that a range of operational metrics shifted between April and May and that the department will begin hiring to fill merit-division vacancies.
The sheriff reported calls for service increased 6% from 2,124 in April to 2,264 in May, crash reports rose 13% from 81 to 93, and citations increased 4% from 671 to 700. Traffic stops decreased slightly, from 783 to 774, and car-deer crashes rose from 18 to 21. The sheriff said year-to-date total calls were down 3% compared with 2025 but the transcript contained garbled totals for the year-to-date figures (as read at the meeting).
On personnel, the sheriff said Deputy Michael Matsky submitted a resignation from the merit division and requested to return to the jail division; the department granted that request and will begin recruiting to fill the merit-division vacancy.
The sheriff also announced the department is beginning preparations for the 2027 budget and that officials are not seeking general pay increases during the budget hearing, only adjustments tied to contractual service obligations such as food services, medical services and body cameras. "During the budget hearings, the council does not discuss raises," the sheriff said, adding the department will not present pay-raise requests during those hearings.
The meeting record shows the board approved routine minutes earlier in the session and later moved to adjourn; a motion to adjourn was made, seconded and the board voted to adjourn at 9:13 a.m.
