Secaucus reports gains on Form C benchmarks but officials warn gaps remain; inclusion score draws concern

Secaucus School District officials presented Form C benchmark results showing measurable gains this school year while acknowledging work remains to bring all students to proficiency.
Felicia Chhatri, director of elementary education, walked the board through Form A/B/C comparisons and year-to-year charts for ELA and mathematics. Chhatri described benchmark categories (exceeding, meeting, bubble, approaching, partially meeting, not meeting) and said the dashboard helps the district identify standards with low proficiency, review pacing guides and target interventions. She described action steps including expanded professional development, Wilson-certified teachers, Lexia certification for interventions, NJSLA preparation programs, and emphasis on reducing chronic absenteeism.
At public comment, resident Anthony Granary noted the district’s improvement numbers — citing ELA rising from 49% to 53.9% and math from 33.5% to 40.3% — and praised teachers while urging continued attention. Granary also highlighted the district’s low inclusion rating from the New Jersey Department of Education (34.45% under the 2024 determinations), saying that inclusion must be a priority.
Chhatri and the interim superintendent explained that the benchmark data will inform curriculum pacing, intervention groupings and administrative action plans that the superintendent and administrative team will convert into annual goals. The board acknowledged the need to monitor progress and to provide parents and the community access to outcomes reports posted on the district website.
Next steps: District staff will continue summer curriculum planning, expand targeted interventions and publish outcome reports from strategic planning meetings and benchmark analyses on the district website.
