Sheriff’s deputy reports larger fishing groups and potential enforcement steps in North Oaks

Deputy Lydon told the Council that this year’s fishing complaints have involved larger groups and that many people fishing are juveniles, often middle-school age. The Sheriff’s office is working with the North Oaks Homeowners Association (NOHOA) and Ramsey County Sheriff community service officers to educate the public about no-fishing regulations and to disperse groups when necessary.
Deputy Lydon said in some recent incidents officers found trespassers in a turn-around on Island Road and arrested an individual who had previously been trespassed from North Oaks. The deputy said repeat offenders can be ticketed under DNR authority and that NOHOA also has the authority to issue tickets for fishing violations.
Councilor Andrew Gaspard noted his recent ride-along with Deputy Lydon and reminded residents they can request a property watch through the City and Sheriff’s office when they will be away. City staff and deputies are also testing interactive flashing speed signs and relocating the speed cart during road construction to manage traffic through neighborhood detour areas.
Council did not take formal action on enforcement policy at the May 14 meeting; the report was informational and Council encouraged continued coordination among deputies, NOHOA and city staff.
