Rock Hill School Board honors state champions, academic achievers and unveils new administrators

At its June 10 business meeting, the Rock Hill School District board recognized student-athletes, academic honorees and introduced several new administrators.
Mr. McCall introduced the South Point High School boys track and field state championship team and coaches, naming Coach King, Coach Weathers and Coach Sacko. Coach Sacko, identified in the meeting as the head coach, thanked the board “for the time in this meeting to recognize us for our hard work and our dedication.”
Alicia Johnson, who presented AP and dual-credit recognitions, told the board that the district honored more than 300 seniors across multiple programs. “This is an award that recognizes the ability to demonstrate bilingualism, multilingualism, and biliteracy in English and another language,” Johnson said, describing the South Carolina Seal of Biliteracy and the proficiency levels used for bronze, silver and gold recognition.
Coach Steven Smith, Rock Hill High School’s throws coach, introduced Aiden Graham, who won both the shot put and discus titles at the 5A division state meet. “He won the shot put and discus competitions,” Smith said, and added that Graham is nationally ranked and will compete in throwing events at the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Elder introduced several district leadership appointments. Dr. Ryan Kirkland was named principal of Saluda Trail Middle School; Sarah Hayes was introduced as Northwestern High School’s new athletic director; and Anthony Scarone was presented as the district’s new executive director of human resources. The administration said these are among roughly 26–27 leadership and administrative appointments for the district.
The board had added the recognition item to the agenda at the start of the meeting after voting to approve an amended agenda; Vice Chair Jennifer Hutchinson moved to approve the amendment and a board member identified as Mr. Burns seconded the motion. The chair announced the motion carried.
The meeting included photographs and round-of-applause recognitions for the students and staff. No policy decisions were made as part of the recognitions.
Looking ahead, several of the new administrators will join the district as noted by Dr. Elder; the board did not set effective start dates during the meeting.
