NVUSD board readmits some expelled students, extends others' expulsions

The Napa Valley Unified School District Board of Education on Monday approved staff recommendations to readmit students who had been recommended for readmission and to extend expulsions for other students through the first semester of the 2026–27 school year.

Trustee Gonzalez Mars reported the actions in a closed-session report, citing Education Code and federal privacy protections. On the readmission motion, Trustee Martin moved and Trustee Jenkowitz seconded; the roll-call vote was recorded as unanimous. Board records show the same pattern for the non-readmission recommendations, including a named student (student number 12112025E) whose expulsion was extended through the first semester of 2026–27.

The board tied both votes to staff recommendations provided in closed session; no additional details about the students or the underlying incidents were disclosed during the open report consistent with privacy rules. The board discussed and approved the motions by roll call, with Trustees Shu, Gonzalez Mars, Jenkowitz, Martin, Water and Riser recorded as voting in favor.

Because the matters were handled under closed-session provisions of the Education Code and federal student privacy rules, the board did not discuss case-level details in open session. The board’s actions mean the readmitted students will return to district enrollment and the students whose expulsions were extended will remain out of school through the stated term unless additional action is taken.
