Shoreham‑Wading River honors seniors, student leaders and wins NYSPHSAA School of Distinction

The Shoreham‑Wading River board spent a large portion of its meeting recognizing student and community achievements, from art and essay contest winners to athletic postseason accomplishments.
Officials presented certificates to winners in the America's 250th art and essay contest and regional writing contests, acknowledged Girl Scout Gold Award and Eagle Scout recipients, and honored student poets whose work earned state recognition. Administrators read a long list of seniors and the colleges they will attend; staff said scholarships presented at a recent senior awards event totaled ‘‘must have been at least $100,000.'"
Deb Ferry and others presented details of spring athletics: the district reported 219 varsity athletes and 175 scholar‑athlete recognitions this spring, with postseason appearances across many sports. Notable highlights included boys tennis players Ray and Kai Hadaka finishing sixth in the state and earning all‑state honors, a boys pentathlon state qualifier (Frank Valente), and a flag football team that won county and Long Island regional titles and advanced to the New York State finals. Deb Ferry said the district was again named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association School of Distinction for 2025‑26, an award the district credited to varsity teams maintaining a 90+ average.
Administrators also presented the New York State Seal of Biliteracy and the Seal of Civic Readiness to graduating seniors; staff noted medallions were delayed in shipment from the state but certificates were presented that evening. The Triam (music honor society) chapter was recognized as the New York State Chapter of the Year by a national organization, with chapter officers called to the stage.
The recognitions were ceremonial and no policy actions were taken as part of the awards presentations. The board thanked students, staff and community partners and took photographs with honorees.
