The Policy Subcommittee on June 9 approved an updated wellness policy the district developed as part of a state‑led cohort with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Public Health. Presenters said the policy aligns district practice with federal and state nutrition rules that govern the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs.
Cynthia Carboni and Maryanne Courier summarized the process, noting multiple stakeholders and state reviewers contributed to the draft. "We were guided in the development of this policy by mentors and our school community health advisory council," Carboni said, adding the resulting language is designed to meet both state and federal objectives.
The subcommittee voted to forward the wellness policy to the full school committee for final approval.
What happens next: The full committee will consider the policy at its next meeting; the district will continue to use software and internal quality‑control procedures to ensure meal compliance with nutritional standards.
