DPW briefs BPAC on sign installations, Ballenger Creek crossing idea and new bikeways project manager

Department of Public Works staff updated the Frederick County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission Jan. 8 on several ongoing and planned projects affecting bikeways and signage.
DPW staff member David Olney said the 2025-scheduled BMUFL sign installation list includes Kelbaugh Road and Holter Road; Manor Woods Road is being re-evaluated because data‑center projects in the Adamstown area have changed road conditions. Olney said the scope of the Capital Improvement Program project on Michael Mills Road is decreasing and that signage there will be reassessed, and that New Design Road between MD 28 and Adamstown Road is under review. Olney told the commission the program prefers roads with an average annual daily traffic (AADT) of about 1,000 or fewer trips for these signs, and confirmed that sign lists are available in the county’s OpenGov system, according to the minutes.
On trails, Olney said a contracted designer proposed a pedestrian crossing at the Ballenger Creek Trail terminus across Ballenger Creek Pike that could also accommodate bicycles and include a pedestrian signal. Separately, DPW announced that Laura Wiese-Lopez has been hired as Project Manager for Bikeways & Trails; she started last month and will assist with ADA-compliance projects. Wiese-Lopez made brief remarks during the meeting.
