Buckfield warns Community Day parade could be canceled without new volunteers

On May 19, 2026, members of the Town of Buckfield Select Board said the Community Events Committee is short on members and warned that the town’s Community Day parade will not take place unless more volunteers step forward. The board noted the nine-person committee currently has five appointed members and that three terms expire on June 30, 2026.
The board urged residents to apply for committee appointments or volunteer for event tasks even if they are not committee members. "If the town of Buckfield wants a community day for 2026, the committee is going to need members and volunteers to make it happen," a Select Board member said during the meeting.
Board members named several people currently associated with the committee: Everett, David, Jen, Colleen, Jill and Mark Silver, and said committee meeting frequency adjusts depending on event schedules (monthly when idle, biweekly when preparing for events). The members described how volunteers handled tasks for past events such as the parade, trunk-or-treat and Thanksgiving activities.
Officials said interested residents can reach out to the town office or check the town website to complete an application, or contact library staff or committee members for volunteer opportunities. The board also encouraged younger residents (age 18 and older) to consider serving and noted some roles are one-year terms.
Next steps: committee members and town staff will continue outreach to recruit volunteers and fill the upcoming vacancies so planning can proceed for summer events.
