Marquette County approves trailer purchase and grant-funded sonar for Sheriff’s Office

The Marquette County Board on June 2 approved two Sheriff’s Office procurements: an enclosed trailer to transport ORVs and a medical rescue sled, and a grant-funded sonar unit for the department’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
Lieutenant Brian Kurin said the county posted an RFP for a new enclosed trailer; five vendors submitted seven bids. The lowest bid that met specifications was $19,999 from Adventure Center of Marquette. Kurin said $18,000 of the purchase would be covered by a Michigan State ORV grant and the remaining $3,789 would come from reserves and proceeds from the sale of the old trailer. The Board approved purchase from Adventure Center for an amount not to exceed $19,999 (motion Comm. Alholm; second Comm. LaLonde); motion adopted 6-0.
Kurin also said the Sheriff’s Office received a $26,030 grant to purchase a sonar unit that mounts on the department’s Oceanbotics ROV. He stated the ROV and its attachments are proprietary to The Oceanbotics Company and that the only compatible sonar is supplied directly by that company; the Board approved purchasing the sonar using grant funds (motion Comm. Nordeen; second Comm. Benzie); motion adopted 6-0.
Minutes note the department considers the sonar necessary for underwater searches, victim location and infrastructure inspection. The procurement records and bid tabulation were placed on file.
