Rice Lake council moves to begin streaming select commission meetings after public push

Following lengthy public comment, the Rice Lake City Council voted to begin streaming selected commission meetings so residents who cannot attend in person can view hearings and votes online.

Councilor Jack moved to stream planning and zoning, finance and budget meetings; the mayor seconded. Public commenters — including several residents who said streaming increases transparency and accessibility for residents who work or have mobility issues — supported the proposal. A resident (Sylvia) earlier complained that a prior meeting’s minutes did not reflect her remarks accurately and said video access would allow residents to verify the record.

Council discussion raised practical concerns: camera placement can capture security footage and the backs of councilors’ heads, audio quality can be poor, staff time is required to operate and upload recordings, and some commission volunteers may prefer not to be on the internet. Council agreed to start with a limited set of meetings and to ask staff (Tony) to consult the planning and zoning commission and the city attorney before expanding streaming to additional meetings.

Outcome: Motion passed to pilot streaming for planning and zoning, finance and budget meetings with staff directed to gather input from commissions and the city attorney and return with recommendations; council tabled a full rollout pending that review.
