Rice Lake council approves stipends for firefighters deployed on mutual aid

Council discussion and staff reports said the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reimbursed the city $16,000 for the deployment; city expenses for the response were reported at about $1,500. Under the resolution, participating firefighters will receive $400 for each full shift and $200 for each half shift. City staff reported 14 full shifts and four half shifts were logged for the deployment.
A council member noted that the DNR reimbursement more than covered the stipend payments and left funds to deposit into the department’s education fund. "We did receive and have received it already, $16,000," a council member said, adding the reported expenses were "$1,500," and that the stipend program could also support firefighter education.
Outcome: The council moved and passed the resolution without public opposition during the vote. Staff will implement stipend payments consistent with the resolution and accounting for the DNR reimbursement.
