Ocean View appoints two principals in closed session; clerk announces resignation effective tomorrow

The Ocean View School District board reported two personnel actions taken in closed session and a public resignation announcement at its June 9 meeting.

Clerk Jack Sers announced at the start of the meeting that he will resign effective 8:00 a.m. tomorrow because he is moving outside Ocean View School District boundaries. "I am resigning from the board effective tomorrow at 8 a.m. because I am moving out of OBSD boundaries," Sers said. The clerk said the resignation will be forwarded to the county superintendent per the prescribed process.

In the report out from closed session, the clerk said the board approved two employment appointments by roll call: Darlene Lavine was employed as principal at College View Elementary and Joanna Peters as principal at Vista View Middle School. The clerk announced both motions were made and seconded and carried by roll call vote (4–0, Trustee West Morland absent). The board invited each new principal to say a few words and take photos.

Lavine thanked the board, staff and her family, and pledged to support all students at College View. Peters described her local ties, her leadership priorities and pledged to strengthen school–family partnerships at Vista View.

Trustees used the meeting’s board roundtable to publicly thank Clerk Sers for roughly 12 years of service; colleagues cited his leadership through modernization efforts, Measure RB work and pandemic‑era challenges. Sers reflected on his time on the board and said he will miss the district.

Next step: The district will process the clerk’s resignation with the county superintendent and the board will follow district bylaws for filling the vacancy.
