North Bend SD 13 wins state summer-learning grant; board appropriates $80,000 to cover FY expenses

District administrators told the board that North Bend SD 13 received a competitive state summer learning grant for 2026–2028 funded at nearly $450,000 per year, and outlined how the funds will expand summer programming across grade levels.
District staff described elementary programming (July 20–Aug. 7) run in partnership with Champions (after-school and summer provider), a two-week Splash program for incoming kindergarteners (half days, includes breakfast and lunch and parent outreach), a middle-school CodeDanceCreate program (Aug. 10–21) that combines coding and dance with LED suits and take-home drones, and high-school credit-recovery that has already enrolled about 38 students this summer with additional August sessions planned.
Food service director Tim said the district’s summer meal plan will run June 22–Aug. 21 and provide free weekly bulk meal pickup for children ages 1–18, and administrators noted distribution sites and that community eligibility will allow breakfast and lunch at no charge in the coming school year.
To permit spending on items that fell between fiscal years, the board approved a resolution to recognize $80,000 in state summer-learning grant revenue in FY25–26 and appropriate those funds (split between support services and enterprise/community services) so the district can legally pay for expenses incurred between March and June 30. The motion was read, moved and seconded, and the board approved the appropriation.
Why it matters: The grant funding expands access to targeted literacy and engagement programming, provides meals and transportation, and supports credit recovery and enrichment opportunities designed to reduce summer learning loss.
