Planning board hears technical review of proposed 321,840‑SF K–5 elementary school

The Hazle Township Planning Department received an update April 21 on a proposed new K–5 elementary school from the Hazleton Area School District (HASD). The project proposes a 321,840‑square‑foot building with capacity the applicant described as 1,200 students, new parking and driveway connections between the high school and an early learning center, and a new private access road to Hazle Township Boulevard.
Engineer Barry Isett and consultant Benesch have provided substantial review comments: Benesch's first review included 57 comments and Luzerne County engineering provided dozens of technical comments. Joe Calabrese said he received Benesch's comments and the applicant team (including Barry Isett and Kevin Markle) is working through them. "Isett is the Engineer for the School District, this was reviewed by Benesch," Calabrese said.
The project package on file includes wetlands analysis, a PCSM report, transportation and EV analyses, and a DEP planning-module submission. Luzerne County Conservation District listed the NPDES application as incomplete in its notice to the township. The board took this as a status update and did not take a final action; applicants were instructed to return with responses to outstanding technical comments.
If the project advances, it will require resolution of county and LCD technical comments, completion of NPDES approvals, and coordination on sanitary-sewer availability noted in the applicant submittal materials.
