The North Wilkesboro Town Council recognized Officer Alison Sheets on June 9 after a resident letter praised her calm response to a May 10 incident at Cascade Falls, in which Sheets helped a family and coordinated transport to an emergency veterinary facility.
Chief Matis and the mayor acknowledged the officer's actions; the chief said a formal presentation would be arranged.
Council also approved operational items: a motion to proceed with installing electronic lock doors at four Valley Marketplace locations passed (total cost presented as $10,174). Staff said the electronic locks would allow authorized staff to lock and unlock facilities by phone, reduce key-change costs and keep restrooms open to the public during posted hours; council asked staff to confirm emergency-override procedures.
Members discussed acquiring a small low-speed patrol unit (a golf-cart-style vehicle) for downtown, the greenway and park patrols; staff estimated the unit would cost roughly $16,000 to $16,500 and said they would return with cost analyses and potential grant opportunities to fund the purchase.
Separately, the council approved a road closure for the Wils Art Gallery's memorial event on Nichols Way/C Street for the upcoming Saturday and heard event logistics from the organizer. The council also agreed to call a public hearing for a zoning text amendment and set a June 25 date.
The meeting closed after the fire department reported two grant opportunities and the council moved to adjourn.
