North Wilkesboro approves $162,000 engineering task order for greenway stabilization

The North Wilkesboro Town Council on June 9 approved Task Order #5 with McGee Associates to provide engineering services (design, bid and construction administration) for stabilization work on three sections of the town greenway.
Staff presented the engineering fee as $162,000 for the design and implementation phase; the stabilization work was described as part of a larger project estimated at approximately $1.93 million. Council members discussed the scope of the work, which includes riverbank stabilization and repair of access points and walkways.
Council and staff also discussed a related greenway issue: a segment of trail that shifted and left pavement exposed. Staff said that section is maintained by the county and that FEMA reimbursements were used to replace a pedestrian counter at the location; the town invested FEMA funds to purchase four counters to reduce future replacement costs and allow the town to remove counters ahead of storms to protect them.
A motion to approve Task Order #5 was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff said the planner will present pedestrian count and camera data later in the year and that details of construction and grant reimbursements will be incorporated into project documents brought back to the council.
