County engineer reports bridge, culvert and crack-seal plans; approved personal sick leave

Tate Schmeling, Pocahontas County engineer, updated the board on road and drainage work and staffing during the Sept. 24 meeting.
Schmeling said he completed interviews for an engineering technician position and reported a bridge on the county line has been completed. He said a pre-construction meeting is scheduled for box culverts in Sherman Township and crews will coordinate a contractor (named in the minutes as Bargan) to perform N65 crack sealing to extend road life until full replacement is possible in a couple of years.
He described a Garfield landowner’s plan to add tile adjacent to a drainage ditch; the engineer said the landowner’s work followed required specifications and requested that the county drainage ditch district assume maintenance after the tile project is completed. The board took that request under advisement as the item was informational in the register of proceedings.
Schmeling told the supervisors he and his wife are expecting a baby next week and asked to use his accrued sick time because he does not qualify for Family and Medical Leave Act protections; the board approved his request for sick time.
