Mills and Fremont WIC managers report steady enrollment, push to boost pregnant-woman participation

Kris Wood, Mills County WIC manager, told the Mills County Board of Health on May 11 that local WIC participation is tracked through Glenwood clinics and typically ranges from 115 to 125 participants, with March reaching 135. Wood summarized services provided to pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age five and outlined outreach steps to increase enrollment among pregnant women, including updated English- and Spanish-language materials, virtual appointment options and referrals through the Unite Us platform.
Emily Eid, Maternal, WIC, First Five, and Child and Adolescent Health Director with Matura Action Corporation, reported that Fremont County’s WIC clinic in Sidney has held steady attendance for about three years at roughly 60–80 participants per monthly clinic and that the program serves approximately 70 active participants receiving benefits in Fremont County. Eid said enrolling pregnant women is the program’s biggest challenge statewide and that outreach in Fremont is targeted toward increasing pregnant-mother enrollment.
The board heard that Pottawattamie County’s WIC team operates monthly Glenwood clinics on the second Monday of each month and that Matura operates a monthly Sidney clinic on the fourth Tuesday. Both presenters emphasized service components—healthful-food benefits, screenings, education and referrals—and described efforts to make participation more accessible for pregnant mothers.
Board members did not take formal action on WIC operations at the May 11 meeting; the reports were received as informational updates. The boards’ next meeting is scheduled for June 8 at 6 p.m.
