At the start of the June 9 meeting the City Council recognized community volunteers and nonprofit partners. Mary Anne, the special‑events organizer for Taste of Wylie, presented a check for $46,072 to representatives from local pantries and partner charities.
"It is my honor to present this check for $46,072," Mary Anne said as nonprofit leaders accepted the donation. Organizers compared the amount to last year’s $24,000 and thanked sponsors, volunteers and local restaurants whose donated food and time make the event possible.
Representatives from local food pantries and ministries announced a short‑term summer feeding program: starting next Monday, Smith Library will distribute weekly bags (sandwiches, chips and fruit) to children in need while no formal student feeding program is available this summer.
The council also read a Juneteenth proclamation recognizing the holiday’s history and encouraging participation. Tanya Johnson, treasurer of the Juneteenth organization of Wylie, invited residents to the 7th annual Wylie Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on Saturday, June 13 at Old City Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and listed music, vendors and honorees.
What happens next: The feeding program is scheduled to begin next Monday at Smith Library; the Juneteenth celebration will be held June 13 at Old City Park.
