Junth planning committee outlines family-focused celebration at Sergeant Steve Owen Memorial Park

Community organizers and park staff on Tuesday gave councilmembers an overview of the fifth annual Junth celebration planned for Saturday, June 13 at Sergeant Steve Owen Memorial Park.
Junth co-chairs and subcommittee leads described the event’s family-reunion theme and youth-centered programming. Joshua Patterson said the committee will host activities from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. to commemorate June 19th and bring the community together. Creative lead Brandon, known as YB Terrion, said the event will emphasize youth performers and an experiential "root, rise and reach" theme.
Activities described by committee chairs include: a soft play area for toddlers, potato-sack and relay races, a foam arena, spades and domino tournaments, an art walk of youth submissions and a stage with primarily under-18 performers. Arts co-chair Lana London said winners from a youth art contest will be displayed along the art walk, and that the committee will distribute copies of the Emancipation Proclamation as part of the historical emphasis.
The parks department clarified that community partners lead planning while the city provides logistical and operational support; staff also confirmed the event date change from a previous holiday weekend to increase attendance. Several councilmembers thanked volunteers and committee members for expanding community seats at the planning table.
What’s next: Organizers invited the public to Junth on June 13 and will continue coordination with parks staff for staging, vendor placement and safety logistics.
