Union County commissioners approve primary canvass, schedule recount in tied Committeewoman race

The Union County Board of Commissioners approved the canvass of the June 2, 2026 primary election during a special session held June 4 at the Union County Courthouse in Elk Point.

Commissioner Kimmel moved to approve the canvass; Commissioner Ballard seconded and the motion carried, clearing the way to finalize results from the county primary. The board had earlier approved the meeting agenda on a motion by Commissioner Dailey, seconded by Commissioner Ballard, and approved minutes from the May 26 meeting on a motion by Commissioner Ustad, seconded by Commissioner Kimmel.

A post‑election audit drawing was held later in the session. Commissioner Ballard drew the county’s assigned precinct for the Register of Deeds audit (Precinct 9), and Commissioner Kimmel drew Precinct 1 for the District 16 State Representative audit. The board recorded that a tied vote for Committeewoman in Precinct 12 will replace the planned post‑election audit for that contest; the recount is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the courthouse.

IT staff member Hertel presented a quote for a new server and discussed the proposal with commissioners; no action was taken on the procurement and the matter was scheduled for further consideration at the board’s June 9 regular meeting.

The board recessed from 11:04 a.m. to 11:14 a.m., briefly adjourned at 11:38 a.m., returned at 11:45 a.m. to complete the audit drawing and other business, and adjourned finally at 11:55 a.m. until its June 9 meeting. Auditor Katie Winquist attested the minutes.
