Lawrence City commissioners voted to revoke multiple wholesale dealer licenses for businesses the commission found had no confirmed physical location, and approved several temporary alcohol and business licenses during a meeting.
The commission voted to revoke dealer licenses tied to businesses that staff and the building manager could not locate, after commissioners said they visited sites and found signs the businesses were not operating at the licensed addresses. Commissioner Leer made the motion to revoke licenses for dealers who lacked a usable location; Commissioner Morales seconded, and the motion carried. Commissioners discussed notifying motor vehicle authorities and sending formal letters to affected licensees.
Commissioners also approved a Class 2 dealer license for a business at 316 Brewway on a motion by Commissioner Morales, seconded by Commissioner Leer; the motion passed following routine confirmation of bonds and insurance. A common-business license for premises at 200 Broadway was approved after the applicant told the commission the business formerly operated at that location.
The commission approved one-day liquor licenses for a Labor Day weekend festival (Sept. 4–6) and separately approved six one-day alcohol permits for a summer cultural “sunset” series on June 18 and 25 and July 9, 16, 23 and 30. Johansson, an organizer who identified the events as a multi-week cultural series that draws regional visitors and benefits local restaurants, told commissioners the events feature music and cultural programming. Commissioners and staff discussed ABC guidance that requires individual permit payments and the process for applicants to pick up permits from the office after approval.
Commissioners emphasized coordination with the police department for public-safety planning. Lieutenant Fus confirmed there were no questions and staff were instructed to work with the police on event safety. For the revoked dealer licenses, commissioners asked staff to send letters and to check registration records so that motor vehicle or registry records reflect the revocations.
The commission also granted approval for Luigi Polano (doing business as Luigi) to move a wholesale-dealer location to 181 Canal Street with conditions: no cars for sale on the premises, and the operator must post the business name, hours and contact number on the door; failure to notify the commission of future moves may prompt revocation.
The commission moved item three to the end of the agenda, set the next meeting for June 24 at 5:30 p.m., and adjourned the meeting.
Actions recorded in the meeting included motions to approve minutes, change the next meeting date, approve multiple one-day alcohol licenses, grant dealer and common-business licenses, revoke licenses for inactive dealers, and approve a new location for a wholesale dealer. Staff were directed to send notices to affected licensees and coordinate with the motor vehicle registry and the police on enforcement and event safety.
