Signal Hill students win national book-song prizes, bring $8,000 to school library

Signal Hill students and their teachers told the Voorhees Township Board of Education that the school’s participants placed among national winners in a book-song challenge and will use prize funds to add books to the school library.
Principal S. said Signal Hill students won five of 15 grand prizes in the contest and several category awards, producing an estimated $8,000 in total prize money for library purchases and smaller individual awards for students. “This money will be used to purchase new books for our library for students to enjoy,” Principal S. said.
Library media specialist Miss Herz was credited with organizing the project and encouraging student participation. Students who performed at the meeting described how they selected books, wrote lyrics to summarize plot and themes, and rehearsed collaborative performances. “Working together taught us the importance of communication, teamwork, and respecting each other’s ideas,” one student told the board.
Board members congratulated the students, thanked staff and families for supporting the project, and presented small gifts and photographs. The program’s presenters said the contest mixes literacy and music to deepen students’ engagement with reading and the arts.
The board did not take action on the presentation; it served as recognition of student achievement and as notice that the school will receive prize funds for library materials.
