Opportunity Ready update: Roanoke County highlights student portfolios, capstone pilots and expansion plans

Roanoke County Public Schools staff updated the school board on the Opportunity Ready program, the district’s C change framework aimed at producing graduates with critical thinking, communication, collaboration and citizenship skills.

Presenters Mike Riley and Kim Bradshaw described this year’s work: full implementation at elementary grades 3–5, nearly 60% of middle school students presenting curated evidence of skills during a recent showcase, and more than 750 senior portfolio defenses across two designated days. The presenters said that after resubmissions, over 97% of those seniors graduated with an Opportunity Ready seal. District goals for next year include increasing senior participation to about 80% (roughly 900 seniors) and piloting an eighth-grade capstone to better bridge middle and high school experiences.

Staff discussed steps to digitize student artifacts, build performance progressions (developing rubrics that distinguish developing, proficient and exemplary levels), and expand stakeholder involvement so students can present to employers and community partners. Board members praised the program’s state and national recognition and emphasized the program’s balance of deeper learning and core content mastery.

Presenters said the program will continue building consistent performance measures across grade levels and seek ways to increase parent engagement so more students can present their work to adults when families are not available.

The board did not take formal action on the presentation; the update will guide staff work in the coming year.
