Renee and other trustees noted the program's popularity among students and teachers but also raised sustainability questions.
Trustee Matt, who moved approval, and Trustee Jeff, who seconded, emphasized the program’s positive reception: "They did a superior job," Matt said, noting parent and teacher praise. Trustees discussed that the Eureka Schools Foundation had contributed $28,000 last year but declined to fund the contract this year, and that the district’s payment would increase ESF’s earlier contribution to keep the program running for one more year.
Several trustees cautioned that the program should be transitional while the district determines whether to hire permanent staff or otherwise absorb the curriculum into regular staffing. After debate, the motion to approve the contract passed on a routine vote.
