Commissioner Scott Hankins, who presented the project, said the tower plan will use an existing structure to limit costs. The board heard an estimated total project cost of about $2.4 million; Hankins said roughly $1 million remains from the 800 Radio Millage and $774,000 from the General Fund has been designated to cover the county’s share.
The motion to approve the proposal passed with a 4–2 roll-call vote. Commissioners Robert Jess and Joshua Chamberlain were recorded as voting against the measure; four commissioners voted in favor.
Board discussion touched on the role of the CCE 911 Board and the possibility of securing additional grant funding. No amendment to the funding plan was made at the meeting; the approved authorization allows the county to proceed with the Motorola contract within the approved ceiling.
The county administrator thanked the board for the vote and said the project “serves many needs” for island communications and emergency response. Next steps identified by staff include finalizing contract documents and moving forward with tower work and any required permitting.
