PSEG outlines Route 73 substation expansion in Maple Shade; in‑service planned for June 2027

PSEG engineer Neil Sha said civil construction started June 1, 2026 and will continue through October, while electrical work is scheduled to begin in August 2026. The company plans to energize the upgraded station on June 1, 2027, citing a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reliability requirement that sets firm timing for the work.
Sha described the work as converting the existing straight bus to a seven‑breaker ring bus, installing a prefab control house (containing relay and communications equipment) and adding enhanced physical security including precast concrete transformer walls and an anti‑cut exterior fence. He said transformers will remain in place and that the control house is scheduled to be delivered to site on Aug. 20, 2026.
During Q&A a council member asked whether the station would be staffed; PSEG said it will be an unmanned station with an operator visiting roughly once a week for yard checks. Sha also noted PSEG owns the adjacent lot and plans to fence and graveled that parcel to remove its current commercial use and add screening and landscaping along Route 73.
No formal council action was taken; PSEG representatives said they will continue coordination with township staff on landscaping, screening, and construction scheduling.
