Rothschild board weighs deer culling options, sends administrator to gather details

The Village of Rothschild discussed options July 8 for addressing its white-tail deer population after Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle said he met with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regional contact.
VanDeWalle presented two municipal pathways. Under the first, the DNR could issue nuisance permits that the village would distribute to residents who request them; those permits would allow bow or crossbow hunting and generally require sufficiently large private property to be feasible. Under the second, the village could administer a DNR-issued permit to hire a contractor who would perform sharpshooting, typically conducted in winter over bait at night; the cost for such contractor work was listed as unknown and management of carcasses was discussed (deer are usually donated to a food pantry).
Rex Zemke urged VanDeWalle to obtain a proposal that estimates the cost of contractor culling. Bill Schremp recommended conducting a poll on Facebook to assess resident interest. On a motion by Zemke, seconded by Dan Helgeson, the board authorized VanDeWalle to gather further details about deer culling options and present his findings to the board; the motion carried 7-0.
