City reports: cleanup-day changes, new waste contract includes bulky-item pickups, and summer car shows to continue

At its June 4 meeting the Planning Commission received several staff updates on recent city operations and events.
Veto reported that changes to the annual cleanup day (limits on vehicle/trailer size and a modest charge) reduced turnout from roughly 312 vehicles last year to about 74 this year, easing congestion at the site. Veto said the city received only one substantive complaint about charging for the service.
Veto also said the City Council approved a new five-year solid-waste hauling contract with Tennis Sanitation. As part of the new contract the hauler offered an expanded bulky-item curbside benefit: six large-item pickups per household per year and two appliance pickups per household per year at no additional charge; the city will continue to pay tipping fees. Veto said staff will finalize logistics for scheduling and tracking those pickups before the new service period begins.
On downtown events, staff said the History Cruisers group plans to scale back its schedule and that Invisible Wounds Project (Forest Lake) will run additional Fridays, maintaining car-show activity through the summer and potentially broadening the types of vehicles allowed. Commissioners said the events draw downtown visitors and noted the groups may request donations to defray operational costs such as porta-potties and cleanup.
