Officials, residents renew debate over artificial turf in Rockwell Park plans

Counselor Merritt recommended putting the turf question on the town council agenda so elected officials can resolve competing views. ‘‘I would suggest that we put it on the town council agenda and have this out because that’s the only place it’s going to be settled,’’ Merritt told the committee.
Why it matters: choice of playing-surface material affects long-term maintenance cost, replacement cycle, potential environmental and health tradeoffs, and which entity—town, developer or school system—bears capital and operating costs. Several members said previous Park Committee votes had opposed artificial turf for future replacements, but staff said plans submitted to TPZ included turf as an option.
