Westford cemetery staff, veterans prepare for Memorial Day; board reviews gazebo estimate and community planting idea

Cemetery staff and local veterans began preparatory work for Memorial Day, and the Town of Westford Board of Cemetery Commissioners reviewed community-focused projects during its May 14 meeting.
Cemetery Division Supervisor Connor Mendes reported that grounds staff are spreading mulch and placing entrance flowers ahead of Memorial Day and expect to begin irrigation before June 30. Chair Terry Stader reported that veterans from American Legion Post 159 placed flags throughout Westford cemeteries on May 9, completing flag placement at St. Cathererine’s and Fairview in roughly two hours. Heather Monahan arranged a short tribute for Frank C. Johnson, a World War I veteran whose marker had been found after being buried beneath soil; Colin Bode, the veterans service officer, placed a flag and the veterans saluted.
Commissioner Mary Lyman presented an itemized estimate from O’Lalor Painting and Remodeling for $19,730 to renovate the gazebo at Fairview Cemetery, using a combination of native fir and pressure-treated wood; she said the commission will seek Community Preservation Committee funding and asked members to review the estimate before the next meeting. The board also discussed Mary’s proposal to invite Scouts and children to plant daffodils and other spring perennials along Pine Grove’s woodline; Connor supported the idea and Chair Stader asked them to coordinate the logistics.
Chair Stader reminded attendees that the Kiwanis Club’s Apple Blossom Parade, breakfast and carnival will be May 16 and that Westford CAT will post online coverage.
