Superintendent Ginger announced the hire of Heather Smith Verano as principal of Summit Elementary and outlined immediate safety and summer operations measures.
"All of our buildings have been secured. We are in the process of rekeying some of our doors and the exterior key lock cylinders have been disabled," Ginger told the board, noting summer school and student athletics would resume the next day. She thanked staff and community members for rapid work to secure buildings and said the district made targeted operational changes so programs could continue.
Ginger said Heather Smith Verano brings experience as a K–12 curriculum and instruction facilitator and an elementary dean; Verano will hold a meet-the-principal open house on July 28 and district open houses for new families will be June 23 and July 28. Staff also described outreach activities to recruit students, including farmers-market booths, homeschool informational meetings and distribution of welcome packets through local partners.
Board members thanked staff for safety steps and community engagement. Facilities and maintenance needs remain a concern: trustees noted capital account balances are limited and that emergency HVAC failures could quickly exhaust projected capital funds, underscoring the need to pursue grants and other funding sources.
