Iris Balinski, arts and events program manager, presented the winners of the 18th annual Life in Louisville photography contest on March 10, naming category winners, the People’s Choice, and the grand-prize recipient.
"These photos are really special. They're the living memory of our town," Balinski told the council as she announced results compiled by a community jury and the public vote.
Balinski said 74 residents submitted 225 photos this year — 75 more than the prior year — and that the People’s Choice contest received 230 votes. Winners named by category included Claire Steppleton (animals and pets, and first in sunrises/sunsets), Dylan Hernandez, Richard Kurandi, Douglas Braun, Lina Wenzel (community events and people), Ronan Young Knickerbocker (student photography), and others; Balinski also thanked local photographer Megan Sweeney for serving on the jury. She announced the People’s Choice winner as Lena Wenzel and the grand-prize winner as Claire Steppleton.
Balinski said certificates will be mailed to entrants who were not present and that selected images will be added to the city’s photo repository and used in city publications such as the Lantern.
Mayor Le and council members thanked staff and participants and encouraged the community to view the winning images. The presentation took about 20 minutes and concluded with staff noting the images will be reused for city publications and promotions.
