Barnwell officials report on parks and public safety; Fuller Park design work moves forward

Barnwell City Council received routine departmental reports on Feb. 2 and heard updates on Fuller Park planning and other city operations.
Parks and Recreation: Councilmember Alicia Davis reported that basketball has four weeks remaining, baseball begins tonight with practice and equipment pickup, the "Carnival of Love" Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance is scheduled for March 27 (6–8 p.m.) at Lemon Park, and a benefit golf tournament is planned to raise sponsorships for Barnwell and Williston recreation programs.
Police: Police Chief Michael Butts provided the monthly report and thanked Barnwell County for assistance during the funeral for former Sgt. Don Creech. Butts said the department passed its South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) audit and will be reaudited in two years. On staffing, seven applications were received for two vacancies but only two applicants appeared for testing; one officer is scheduled to graduate from the police academy on Feb. 13.
Fire and Planning: Fire Chief Phillip Delk delivered the monthly fire report. On building and planning matters, Councilmember Jana Myers requested updates on properties reviewed with Safebuilt for violations or condemnation; Mayor Still asked staff to obtain an updated list of houses from Beth Overton for the Blight Program and a list of condemned houses from Joshua Thomas with Safebuilt.
Fuller Park and operations: Interim City Administrator Tony Dicks said HVAC replacement quotes are being solicited, grant projects continue, and a new server has been installed at City Hall. Regarding Fuller Park, SCDOT asked the city for a boundary survey to clarify jurisdictional responsibilities; Webbs Surveying will perform the survey. Dominion Energy offered to supply existing lights on a rental basis. Consultant JLA will request RFQs in March for a planned food-truck area at Fuller Park. A vendor on state contract has been identified for special-needs playground equipment, and city staff plan to meet with a special-needs parent group to discuss installation and needs.
Council adjourned after the reports; no additional budgetary votes were recorded during the departmental updates.
